Tampering with tampers

Question

Dear Dr. Brew,
I've been in the coffee industry for about one year now, and I feel like its time I buy my very own, customized tamper. Since tampers are expensive, come in different shapes and materials, and are offered by so many retailers online, what should I look for and where should I go to find a tamper that works best for me?
From,
Neil

Answer

Neil,
Tampers are a very personal choice. I have seen custom models as well as products that are mass produced. The majority of espresso portafilters are the same inner diameter. Tampers can have a flat or curved surface and a diameter of 53 - 58mm that contacts the ground coffee. Finding a tamper handle style that feels comfortable in the palm is a must. The weight of tampers generally are 14 + ounces. The materials (exotic woods and stainless) and craftsmanship of design are items to consider in your choice.
